Couples Massage: What to Expect & How It Works

Couples massage sounds pretty simple—two people get massages at the same time—but it tends to create a lot of questions before that first appointment.

Do we have to be a couple? Can we choose our therapists? Do we both get the same pressure? What happens when we arrive? Can one person get deep tissue while the other just wants to relax?

At Tacora, couples massage is designed to be straightforward: two people, two massage therapists, one room, and two massages happening at the same time.

Here’s everything you need to know before booking.

Quick Answer

A couples massage is simply two people receiving massage at the same time in the same treatment room, each with their own massage therapist.

You do not have to be a romantic couple. Couples massage can be booked by spouses, partners, friends, siblings, parents and adult children, or anyone else who wants to enjoy the experience together.

At Tacora, couples massages are available in:

60 Minutes · $190
90 Minutes · $280

Both guests book the same appointment length, but each massage can still be customized individually.

How Does a Couples Massage Work?

A couples massage uses one larger treatment room with two massage tables and two massage therapists.

You arrive together, check in, and each person communicates with their own therapist about things like:

✓ Preferred pressure
✓ Areas of tension
✓ Areas to avoid
✓ Whether you want relaxation or more focused work
✓ Any relevant health information

Once both of you are ready, the massages take place at the same time.

You’re sharing the room—not the massage.

Do We Have to Be a Romantic Couple?

Not at all.

Despite the name, couples massage isn’t limited to romantic partners.

We regularly think of it simply as two people who want to receive massage together.

You could book with:

  • Your spouse or partner
  • A friend
  • A sibling
  • A parent
  • An adult child
  • Another family member
  • Someone you’re celebrating with

No romantic relationship required.

Do We Both Have to Get the Same Type of Massage?

No.

You share the room and appointment length, but each massage is still customized to the individual person.

For example:

One person might want a relaxing medium-pressure massage while the other prefers firmer work through their back and shoulders.

That’s completely fine.

Each therapist works with the person on their own table.

Do We Have to Use the Same Pressure?

Definitely not.

Pressure preference is individual.

One person may prefer light pressure while the other wants firm or deep work.

Tell your own therapist what feels best to you, and don’t worry about matching the person on the table next to you.

Can We Choose Our Massage Therapists?

Yes, based on availability.

If there are specific therapists you’d like, you can choose them when appropriate appointment availability lines up.

Because a couples massage requires two therapists to be available at the same time, your options can sometimes be more limited than when booking a single massage.

If therapist choice is important to you, booking farther ahead generally gives you more options.

Why Can Couples Massage Be Harder to Book?

A normal massage requires:

One therapist + one opening.

A couples massage requires:

Two therapists + matching openings + the couples room available at the same time.

That makes the scheduling puzzle a little more complicated.

Even when you see plenty of individual massage openings online, those times may not line up in a way that creates an available couples appointment.

If you’re having trouble finding a time online, call or text us at 319-939-6637 and we can take a look.

Do We Both Have to Book the Same Length?

Yes.

At Tacora, both people in a couples massage receive the same appointment length.

Current couples options are:

60-Minute Couples Massage — $190

A full hour for both guests with their own massage therapist.

90-Minute Couples Massage — $280

More time for both guests to relax, receive a full-body massage, or allow additional attention to areas of tension.

One person cannot receive 60 minutes while the other receives 90 during the same couples appointment.

Will Our Massages Start and End at the Same Time?

The appointments are scheduled together, so both massages are designed to take place during the same couples session.

Each therapist may work a little differently during the appointment, but you’re both receiving your massage during the same scheduled time.

What Happens Before the Massage?

Each person completes the required intake information and speaks with their own therapist before the massage begins.

This is your chance to discuss:

✓ Pressure preference
✓ Problem areas
✓ Injuries or concerns
✓ Areas you don’t want worked
✓ What you’re hoping to get from the massage

You do not have to want the same things from your massages.

Do We Get Ready in the Same Room?

Because you’re sharing the couples room, you’ll both prepare for the massage in that room after the therapists step out.

Just like any massage appointment, you undress according to your comfort level and get underneath the sheet and blanket on your own massage table.

Professional draping is used throughout both massages.

Are We Supposed to Talk During a Couples Massage?

Only if you want to.

Some people chat with each other during much of the appointment.

Others start talking and then realize about ten minutes in that both of them have gone completely silent. 😆

There is no expectation either way.

You can talk, relax quietly, or fall asleep.

Can One of Us Get Deep Tissue?

Yes.

At Tacora, firmer/deep tissue work does not require a separate upgrade fee.

If one person prefers deeper pressure and the other doesn’t, each therapist can adjust their massage accordingly.

As always, pressure also depends on the individual therapist’s style and what is appropriate for the person receiving the massage.

What If One Person Has Never Had a Massage Before?

That’s completely fine.

A couples massage can actually be a comfortable way for someone to try massage for the first time because they’re going through the experience with someone they know.

Your therapist will explain what you need to know and give you privacy to get ready.

Is Couples Massage Better for Special Occasions?

It can be—but you definitely don’t need a special occasion.

Couples massage is popular for things like:

  • Anniversaries
  • Birthdays
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Mother’s Day
  • Trips or days off together
  • Gifts
  • Celebrations

But “we both need a massage” is also a perfectly good reason.

Should We Book Ahead?

If you need a specific day, time, or pair of therapists, yes—especially for evenings and weekends.

Couples massage requires two matching therapist openings, so these appointments can be harder to find at the last minute.

Booking ahead gives you a better chance of getting the time and therapists you prefer.

What If We Can’t Find a Couples Appointment Online?

Call or text us at 319-939-6637.

Online booking can only show appointments that fit the scheduling rules currently available.

Sometimes our front desk can help you look at nearby dates, different times, or therapist combinations.

You can also use our online waitlist if your preferred time isn’t currently available.

Can We Book Two Individual Massages Instead?

Yes, but they won’t necessarily be in the same room.

If being together isn’t important and you mainly want massages at the same time, two individual appointments may sometimes give you more scheduling options.

If you specifically want to share the treatment room, book the Couples Massage service.

How Do We Choose Between 60 and 90 Minutes?

Choose 60 Minutes If:

✓ You want a standard-length massage together
✓ You’re newer to massage
✓ You mainly want relaxation
✓ You have a limited amount of time

Choose 90 Minutes If:

✓ You both enjoy longer massages
✓ You want more time for problem areas
✓ You want full-body massage without feeling rushed
✓ You want more time simply to relax

Neither is better—the right choice is whichever fits what both of you want from the appointment.
